Makara or Capricorn individuals are very independent, depending on others is a sign of weakness. Taking risks is not in their nature they like familiarity and surety of tried and tested methods. They command respect but they never dominate anyone or anything. Capricornians in a negative mode, ooz off dark gloomy pessimistic moods, they can be very selfish and possessive.

In Vedic astrology, Shani is master of the planet Saturn, rules the sign of Capricorn. Shani is the offspring of Surya (sun) and Chaya (shade) and he did not have an easy upbringing, he faced many challenges and difficulties, but he overcame them all. Often he is regarded as a malefic sign always dealing out doom and gloom.

It is often said that if you want to have the best, achieve the best, be the best, you have to be prepared to suffer disappointments, losses, even pain but then the rewards are beyond the best that you could have imagined.

Shani is said to put hardships in your way. Therefore if the planet Saturn appears on your horoscope radar, it is seen as malefic. But the reality is that if you overcome the hardships Shani throws your way, the gifts of wisdom, spirituality, fame, patience, abilities to lead and organise, sense of justice and awareness of right and wrong and the ability to think clearly, a long healthy life are at your beck and call!

Kashmir sapphire and diamond ring

Blue is the number one colour that people pick in the world and amazingly, for the supposedly most malefic deity, Shani's colour is blue and blue sapphire is his gemstone. In sanskrit or hindi it is called neelam. The sapphire needs to be completely natural and it needs to

"exhibit a brilliance, a star like effect from inside when viewed in reflected light, emitting rays of light from inside, the blue colour is that of the neck of a peacock, a velvety cornflower blue"

To find a blue sapphire which displays such qualities is difficult and indeed you need deep pockets to buy such a sapphire. There there are other blue stones which display such qualities but either they are rare or they are just not valued by people as blue sapphires. Gemstones such as blue kyanite, blue spinel, blue lapis lazuli, iolite will also give excellent results.

Your birthstone gem which goes by the month of your birth is often seen as a modern concept but it goes back thousands of years across many cultures from Tibetan to Russian to Roman. Different gemstones are allocated to the same month by different cultures. But for the month of January the garnet is the common birth gemstone across all cultures.

If you are just at the start of your curiosity of gems and crystals, start with a quartz crystal and put it on your desk, or by your bedside, or have it sitting on your book shelf. Remember a piece of quartz chip powers your computer so what can it do sitting next to you?
