a Diamond of the First Water
There are some very famous "diamond" sayings
"diamonds are forever"
"diamonds are a girl's best friend"
Both of these were made ultra famous by Shirley Bassey for the James Bond movie "diamonds are forever" and Marilyn Monroe for "Gentlemen prefer Blondes"....
So what does "a diamond of the first water" mean?
"The phrase comes from a technical term used to describe diamonds. The degree of brilliance in a diamond is called its “water”, so a “diamond of the first water” is an exceptionally fine diamond." ***
In Regency times it was also used to describe "an exceptionaly beautiful woman"
